Kalgoorlie

/kælˈgʊəli/ (say kal'goouhlee)

noun
a town in southern central WA, now including the adjoining town of Boulder; gold and nickel mining.
Also, Kalgoorlie-Boulder. {? Australian Aboriginal}
In 1893 gold was discovered by Paddy Hannan on land traditionally occupied by the Wangkathaa people. By 1894 the easily won alluvial gold was worked out and bigger companies moved in, with gold production peaking in 1903. Kalgoorlie seemed doomed to become a ghost town by the late 1920s, but an increase in gold prices in the 1930s led to a boom and a great influx of unemployed, and for the following decade it was the largest gold producer in Australia. The industry went into decline again from 1963 with the closure of many mines, and in 1976 the withdrawal of government subsidies led to further closures, with all underground mining, apart from the Mt Charlotte mine, ceasing. A resurgence in the late 1980s saw the development of the Super Pit, a vast open-cut mine that swallowed up a number of the smaller pits and shafts of the `Golden Mile' into a single operation producing more than 800 000 ounces of gold each year. Kalgoorlie has also benefited from nickel mining and smelting.
